Dear Members,

AWARDS PARTY:

This Sunday, June 23 we will have our Season Awards Party. This event will be held at Jerry’s Billiards in Pasadena and will begin at 12 noon. We will recognize our top teams, top individuals and top women. We will also recognize our Los Angeles Pool League contingent to the West Coast Challenge which will take place June 28, 29 & 30 in San Diego.

If you were a winner of 1st thru 3rd places in any of the Sunday mini tournaments we will have a trophy for you. Come out and celebrate with us the end of a great season of play.

We will have food, free pool play, raffle prizes and a couple mini tournaments. If you’re a captain, please remember to bring two raffle prizes worth $20 each to the Awards Party. Also, please text your players.

On Sunday the Johnny Cochran Memorial Greased Lightning tournament fundraiser was held at Eagle LA. A very special thank you to Charlie for not only letting us use both tables for the majority of the tournament but for also donating the 1st - 3rd extra bonus prizes of $100 worth of drink tickets. Also, looking mighty fine was Marcus who always has a smile for you and works his ass off for our drinking pleasure.

With 17 people registering to play we had a full bracket competing on a 15 second shot clock.

A special thank you to Dan Campbell, Ken Franck and Rommel Salas for coming up from Long Beach to support our League.

The final 3 players racing around the lower table were:
3rd Place Monty Kimball
2nd Place Roberto Valenzuela

and our 'King of the Hill' and undefeated first Place champion Al Ballesteros

The 50-50 raffle of $45 was a battle between Dan Campbell who had 3 tickets, and Tod Davenport who had 2 tickets, in the final drawing. Rather than splitting the pot, the elliminations began leaving Dan $45 richer.  Also included in the 50-50 Raffle drawing were some pool accessories donated by Charley McFeeley who has hung up her pool stick and is enjoying her Tuesday nights and weekends free. We miss you Charley!!!!!

This past Saturday the Los Angeles Pool League held it's first tournament fundraiser of the new season, The Lucky Draw, at Trunks in West Hollywood. A special thank you to Waldo for arranging to have the pool table set back in place and bartender Alex who opened up early for us.

The teams, put together by random draw, had some impressive pairings that guaranteed a fierce competition was going to ensue from the very first break.

There were some incredible shots by some non league guests and new players to our league as well as some veteran players that amazed the onlookers. The top 5 teams to be congratulated on stellar performances are as follows.

1st Place    Tod Davenport and Arnold Castellanos

2nd Place   Saeromi Kim and Jason Woodward

3rd Place   Team JA [squared] Julian Auzenne and Jonathan Arton

4th Place    Tommy Nguyen and Allen Fambro

5th Place    James Prather and Steve Duckman

The 50-50 raffle was won by Jonathan Arton, a first season player in our league on the 'No Trouble' team at Gold Coast. Jonathan very kindly donated the winnings back to the League. Thank you for supporting the League Jonathan, as well as the other players mentioned and not mentioned who showed up to participate, cheer on or shark from the side lines. Special shout out to Mike Harris for sitting this one out so we would have an even number of players.

If you are a new player to the League or having some issues with your game or just don't understand anything your doing on Tuesday night, come to our next fundraiser. The Mentor Tournament at Trunks this coming Saturday, February 22 at 12 noon will be part tournament and part tutoring. I encourage all new players to attend.

LAPL Mardi Gras Schedule

This week only the Monday night match will be played. Tuesday is Mardi Gras and we are taking that night off to avoid crowded conditions in the bars and finding parking in Weho, Hollywood and Los Feliz neighborhoods.

That doesn't mean you can't go to a bar and sell your raffle tickets this is a great opportunity to catch people in a good mood and willing to support our League and as a bonus, a chance to win 1 of 3  flat screen TV's.

Mentor Tournament Recap

On Saturday we held our first Mentor tournament at TRUNKS for new players, under .500 players or anybody looking to improve their game through one on one instruction in a competetive tournament format.

Another big Thank You to Waldo for wheeling out the pool table a second week in a row and to Alex for opening up early again and keeping everybody well hydrated.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to Ran Refael and Roberto Valenzuela for donating their time and sharing their skills and awesome sportsmanship to the players in attendance. Our mentor's went above and beyond in making everyone who attended feel included.

Tod Davenport, who was so excited to participate, designed and hand painted the shirt seen here to commemorate our first Mentors tournament. I hope this will be the first of many similar tournaments geared towards newer or struggling players held after the start of each 8 ball season.

Since the players outnumbered the mentors, each player got to draw the name of a mentor to coach and partner with them for each match as they advanced through the bracket. This was very successful affording each player an opportunity to work with both mentors and see different styles of play.

At the end of the day our top finishers were;

4th Place- Jolon Bankey
3rd Place- Beth Brown
2nd Place- Tod Davenport
1st Place- Patrick Munoz

Mark your calendars for our next Fundraiser, the Johnny Cochran Memorial Greased Lightning at EAGLE LA on Sunday March 1st. 12 noon registration, 1pm start time. Come out and support your League and the Sponsors who choose to keep the tables available for our use on League nights, for our general fundraisers and our West Coast Challenge qualifiers.
